Whenever Halloween is approaching I am reassured of one thing, not that I will get scared, but that I will see young women and girls in provocative costumes flaunting off their bodies and seeking attention.
I’ve heard people say that Halloween is the one chance can dress as sexy as they want and get away with it. Many young women use the day as an excuse to dress indecently, show off and get attention.
Nowadays it is seen as socially acceptable by many for young women to walk around in lingerie on Halloween because it is so common.
I’m always curious what pictures I will see on Facebook of young women making any costume as sexy as it can be; it’s amazing to me what characters or things some women can turn into a sex symbol.
The other day I was looking up costumes online and almost every adult woman costume was a slutty one. It was hard to find one that was cute and modest.
It’s disheartening that it’s so normal for women and girls to have sexy Halloween costumes that now it’s hard to find a costume that is not revealing.
There are the costumes you are guaranteed to see each year such as, sexy police woman, sexy nurse, and a sexy school girl.
But as the years have gone by I’ve noticed more and more young women make any costume they can into a slutty version.
I’ve seen a slutty Minnie Mouse, watermelon, strawberry, plumber, shark, and one that I still can’t get over, a sexy baby. Seriously? That’s just wrong.
Some women throw on a pair of cat ears with a black bra and some Spanx (tight short-shorts) and call themselves a “cat.”
Just because it’s Halloween and you get to dress up as something else, it shouldn’t make it acceptable to walk around in your bra and underwear. Come on women, give yourself some more respect and cover up a little.
Many young women are lacking originality and creativity in their costumes because they are consumed with looking as slutty as possible. You see more women prancing around in next to nothing then
women in a unique, funny or scary costume.
You would think it was a requirement for young women to dress indecently in order to go out for Halloween.
It is possible to look sexy and classy without showing off too much skin and still remaining modest. But many women go too far and reveal so much that it’s not sexy or
flattering anymore; they leave nothing to the imagination.
It’s not right that women have to feel out of place if they want to dress modestly. You shouldn’t have to dress provocatively on Halloween to fit in, and that’s how it seems to be lately.
Even when I was in high school, girls dressed revealing because that’s what they saw as normal. It’s not smart for girls to dress that way when boy’s hormones are going crazy. It’s not sending the right message to boys and it’s sad to think that girls are getting that impression from women and the media.
According to a survey of 351 girls done by the Girl Scout Research Institute, 73 percent of girls (nearly three out of four girls) "compare how they look to girls in the media at least sometimes" and 29 percent (three out of ten girls) compare their looks to the media a lot or all the time. Seventy percent (seven out of ten girls) "said that friends influence how they feel about their bodies," according to the study.
Since girls compare themselves to other girls it isn't smart to set the example of dressing indecently on Halloween, because then they will be more likely to follow that example.
I’ll be honest, I have dressed up in a not-so-decent costume before when I was younger because I knew I could get away with it for that one day.
But as I’ve matured I’ve realized it wasn’t worth it — all it did was attract attention from men and made me look easy.
It sends the wrong impression to men and it makes you look as if you don’t have enough respect for your body.
Sometimes all the extra attention you attract makes your night less enjoyable and can potentially ruin it.
Women and girls shouldn’t feel the need to dress indecently in order to go out or fit in for Halloween. It should be more encouraged for them to dress modestly and be creative with their costumes.
So women and girls remember, Halloween costumes shouldn’t be an excuse to show off your body or see how much attention you can get from revealing too much skin, it should be about how original, funny, or scary you can make it while still being decent.
Give yourself some respect and be different. Cover up “the goods” and turn some heads for having a scary or unique costume.
